参考例文

Sample for Section 1

Ode to Mother’s Love

by Meng Jiao (Tang Dynasty)

Late at night, the loving mother sits with a thread and a needle in her weary hand, sewing clothes for her son who is going on a long journey. She sews on and on, with care and concern, fearing that he may not return as planned. As he watches his mother sew with a heavy heart, the son is lost in thought, wondering how he could ever repay her kindness like the spring sun with his humble affection and gratitude .

Meng Jiao was one of the most famous poets of the Tang Dynasty. His poem “Ode to Mother’s Love” beautifully conveys the subtle emotions of the mother who worries that her son may not return sooner, while the son regrets not being able to return his mother’s boundless affection. In a word, the poem presents a contrast of how great parental love is for children and how little children can return their parents’ love.

Sample for Section 2

A Blessing in Disguise

By Liu An (Western Han Dynasty)

Near the northern border lived a man known for his wisdom. One day, his horse disappeared without reason, crossing into the lands of the nomadic tribes. The villagers sympathized with him, yet the man remarked, “Could this not be a blessing in disguise?”

Several months later, the horse returned, leading a magnificent stallion from the nomad's land. The villagers rejoiced, congratulating the man on his good fortune. However, the man said, “Could this newfound wealth not turn into misfortune?”

As the man’s family became rich with these fine horses, his son was eager to ride them. But unfortunately he fell from a horse and broke his thigh. The villagers came to offer their compassion, yet the man said, “Could this not ultimately lead to good fortune?”

A year passed, and the nomadic tribes launched a massive invasion along the border. The able-bodied men took up arms and fought bravely, yet nine out of ten lost their lives. Only the man and his son, who limped from the previous injury, were spared. So blessings may turn into misfortunes, and misfortunes into blessings. There is no certainty in being good luck and bad luck, and there is no way to detect the depth of such uncertainty.

This tale reminds us that what appears to be good fortune can sometimes sow the seeds of misfortune, and what seems to be a setback may indeed pave the way for good things. The intricate interplay of fortune and misfortune is a profound and unpredictable force that defies simple interpretation.
